Flash floods hit Himachal: Highway blocked with fresh landslide; Mandi, Kullu, Kinnaur worst hit as continuous rain hampers restoration efforts
NEW DELHI: Multiple flash floods struck Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Sunday, disrupting connectivity along the Mandi–Kullu stretch of the Chandigarh–Manali National Highway.
The incidents were reported at Panarsa, Takoli and Nagwain areas. “There has been no report of human loss in the incidents,” said Sachin Hiremath, ASP, Mandi.
Heavy rainfall across the state has left 374 roads, 524 power distribution transformers, and 145 water supply schemes disrupted, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA). Major highways including NH-305 and NH-05 remain blocked due to landslides and flash floods, with Mandi, Kullu and Kinnaur among the worst affected districts.
The cumulative toll this monsoon has risen to 257 since June 20, with 133 deaths caused by landslides, flash floods and house collapses, while 124 people lost their lives in road accidents. Mandi reported the highest disruption, with 203 roads blocked and 458 transformers out of service. In Kullu, 79 roads remain closed, including NH-305 at Jhed (Khanag) where a major landslide occurred.

Officials said restoration work is under way but progress is hampered by continuous rainfall and fresh slides. Water supply schemes were hit in Chamba, Kangra and Mandi, while in Kinnaur six roads, including NH-05, were blocked. Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti also reported outages due to flash floods and high-tension line faults.
Authorities have cautioned that intermittent rainfall in the coming days may worsen conditions and have urged people to avoid travel through vulnerable stretches.

Increasing ecological disturbances are manageable with behavioral shifts in society and less greed by govts to just multiply revenue at the cost of environment. Himalayan tourism has been a dream not just for nature lovers but also for those who make out time for memorable outings a refresher break for their recurring work schedules. While easy revenue generated locally is the compelling reason behind welcoming carpet offered by local govts to visiting crowds came from all across these crowds to some extent have less sense of local belonging, less care for native natural resources, environment not just ignored by crowds but equally by local govts also to have devised more ways to attract more crowds including mega Infra projects sometimes carried out on ad-hoc clearances. Since visiting crowds are paying they have only comfort and recreation on mind and least bothered about local environmental impact. Environmental responsibility lost somewhere in their entitlement of comfort and luxury. Local govts instead manage existing flow of crowd efficiently which is already causing heaps of garbage mostly decomposable material footprints these govts are equally irresponsible to have single point agenda to increase govt revenue, environmental impact takes backseat behind economic priorities. It's not about choosing one between ecology and economics but both could go hand in hand it's simply about awareness and understanding of both to collaborate efficiently with each other. Agreed that Himalayan region has been relatively ignored on development and Infra compared to other regions. Also known to all that Himalayan region has less resources of revenue due to poor connectivity. So building infra in Himalayan region now is not just a tourism priority but necessary for it's overall development. Responsible consumption and it's equally responsible management of resources can fix environmental problem.Read allPost comment
