CHENNAI: The Special Court for CBI cases on Friday convicted and sentenced one Sarfraz Nawaz to five years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, in which Abdul Karim Telgi is the prime accused.
Special judge N Velu, who awarded five years RI to Nawaz, lodged in Bangalore prison, however said the period of sentence already undergone by the accused was set off.

During the earlier hearing prior to framing of charges on August 16, the accused, arrested by the CBI in February 2003, had filed a petition, pleading guilty in the case.
However, the court did not pass any order on his petition since the charges were not framed against him till then.
Subsequently, the court on August 16 framed charges against the accused and a case was posted for trial. When the case came up for hearing today, the judge pronounced his order on the petition filed by Nawaz, which was communicated to him through video conferencing.
The judge adjourned further hearing of the main case to October 22 and informed the same to Telgi and other accused, Jacob Chacko and Abdul Wahid, lodged in Yerwada prison in Pune, and Balaji, lodged in Bangalore prison, through video conferencing.
Barring one Peter Kennedy, the other accused, including Nizamuddin, suspended DIG Mohammed Ali, then Assistant Commissioner of Police Shankar, LIC agent Ramasamy Sadhu and Nasneen, wife of Nizamuddin, who all are on bail, appeared before the court.
