First tribal President of India: All you need to know about Droupadi Murmu

NEW DELHI: NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu, a tribal leader of Odisha, on Thursday was elected as the 15th President of India.

Murmu crossed the 50 per cent mark after the third round of counting to emerge victorious in the poll over her rival Yashwant Sinha.


Here is all you need to know about Murmu — who will be the country's second female President.
* At 64, Murmu will not just be India's 15th president, taking over from Ram Nath Kovind, but will also be the youngest and India's first president to be born after Independence. She will be sworn in on July 25.

* Murmu is the first tribal President of India.


* Murmu was appointed the first woman governor of Jharkhand in May 2015, and held the post for over six years.

* She was a minister in the Odisha government between March 2000 and May 2004, during the BJP-BJD rule.


* A Santhal tribal by birth, she was elected as the MLA from Odisha's Rairangpur assembly constituency in 2000 and 2004 on a BJP ticket.

* Her first steps in politics were taken in Rairangpur where she was elected as BJP councillor in the Rairangpur Notified Area Council in 1997.

* Murmu was awarded the Nilkanth Award for the Best MLA of the year in 2007 by the Odisha Legislative assembly.
