Filmmaker Agnihotri gets relief in 2018 criminal contempt case

Cautioning filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri to be “cautious in future”, the Delhi high court on Monday ended criminal contempt proceedings against him after taking note of his unconditional apology over remarks against a former judge of the HC.

He appeared before Justices Siddharth Mridul and VikasMahajan and reiterated the apology over his 2018 tweets alleging bias against Justice S Muralidhar — then a Delhi HCjudge and currently the Orissa HC chief justice. The tweets were made after Justice Muralidhar quashed activist Gautam Navlakha’s house arrest in the Bhima-Koregaon violence case and ordered his immediate release.

The HC had started the contempt proceedings suo motu against Agnihotri and some others. Agnihotri appeared before the bench on Monday. The lawyer for another alleged contemnor, Anand Ranganathan, assured the HC that he would remain present at the next hearing on May 24.Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India.
