The political developments in Maharashtra have made it clear that past enmity and ideological pretensions are not barriers to future bonhomie

Whatever the political class may think of the unending musical chairs in Maharashtra, the popular reaction to netas changing sides at periodic intervals isn’t likely to be positive. Had these shifts been preceded by events of significance, a review of existing alignments may have been understandable. However, since the then Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray broke away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in November 2019, violated the spirit of the electoral verdict and joined hands with the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to become chief minister, political allegiances have become negotiable for reasons that are grounded entirely on personal ambitions.

The dramatic Eknath Shinde rebellion that was played out in a Guwahati hotel and now, the Ajit Pawar revolt against the grand patriarch of the NCP have both been attributed to the hidden hand of the ruling party at the Centre. This is a charge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won’t even bother to contradict since all it really had to do was tickle the ambitious impulses of those who felt their political growth had hit a glass ceiling.
