Eternally grateful for quick HCQ delivery: Dominican Republic

With MEA accomplishing the herculean task of shipping 200000 HCQ tablets to

Dominican Republic

(DR), which has been badly hit by Covid-19, the

Caribbean

nation's ambassador to India, Hans Dannenberg, wrote to Indian authorities thanking them for the "immense support" extended by India too his country. The consignment arrived in DR from Atlanta where it was sent to by the foreign ministry in a Delta cargo aircraft from Mumbai.

"Although at the earlier stages, it seemed impossible to ship these medicines out of India, due to temporary restriction on couriers. However, without losing hope, the Ministry of

, you and your team have made it possible," said Dannenberg, in a letter addressed to India's consul general in Atlanta Swati Kulkarni.

"During these crises, every contribution saves lives and Indian government has shown true spirits of Humanity towards the country and the people of Dominican Republic. My Government, people of the Dominican Republic and myself, will be eternally grateful to everyone at MEA along with your as well as all your team’s efforts (sic)," he added, as he thanked the Indian officials who helped move the cargo from he Delta office to FedEx in Atlanta.

Kulkarni had coordinated efforts for shipment of 200000 HCQ tablets to DR from Atlanta. "A lot of teamwork went into it. We ensured we had prior clearances from the local foreign office. That allowed us to despatch the consignment from here to DR within 5 hours of it having arrived here from india," said Kulkarni.

Dannenberg also thanked foreign minister S Jaishankar and foreign secretary

Shringla for their efforts in ensuring the medicines reached DR without delay.

DR is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and its representative

Jose Singer

is the president of the Council for the month of April. In a tweet, in response to another tweet by India's permanent representative Syed Akbaruddin, Singer had thanked India for the help provided to his country.

A major tourist destination in the Caribbean, DR has seen around 4000 cases of Covid-19 and close to 200 deaths.
