On February 14, 2017, a nondescript beach resort in Koovathur village in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu was suddenly in the limelight.

It was a little more than two months after J Jayalalithaa’s death (on December 5, 2016), and her aide VK Sasikala was all set to take over as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary and chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
