Encroachers attack Lucknow civic body staff, 2 hurt

LUCKNOW: Encroachers attacked members of Lucknow municipal corporation (LMC) who had gone to clear encroachments near Shubh Marriage Lawn at Indiranagar Sunday. Officials claimed the attackers are of Bangladeshi origin and lodged a complaint.

The LMC team, led by supervisor Meenakshi and food inspector Vijeta Dwivedi, went to Zone 7 in Indiranagar to remove encroachments. However, resistance came from around 200 people who attacked the team, forcing them to retreat for safety.

Meenakshi was assaulted, while team members Shiv Balak and Deep Bhushan were attacked and robbed of their mobile phones. Inspector Vijeta Dwivedi's vehicle was vandalised and her driver Adarsh Vikram Singh was dragged out and roughed up.

Mayor Sushma Kharkwal and municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh visited the site after the incident and expressed concerns over safety of municipal workers.

Later, LMC demolished around 50 illegal huts near Indiranagar police station.
