Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Hemant Soren resigns as CM; stakes claim to form government

Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly election results clearly highlight that regional parties are and will remain pivotal to Indian politics, stated BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on Saturday. In a post on 'X,' he criticized the Congress party for its failure to emerge as a strong opposition and accused it of undermining regional parties.

"The message is loud and clear! The Maharashtra and Jharkhand election results reaffirm that regional parties have always been, and will continue to be, the backbone of Indian politics. The Congress party, unable to establish itself as a formidable opposition, seems fixated on weakening regional parties. This recurring theme speaks volumes," he wrote.

According to the latest trends from the Election Commission's website, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is heading towards a decisive victory in Maharashtra. In Jharkhand, the JMM-led INDIA bloc was leading in 50 of the 81 assembly seats, while the NDA was ahead in 30.

Rama Rao further criticized the BJP's reliance on the Congress's weaknesses, stating that the BJP's survival hinges on the Congress's "inability and incompetence." He accused both national parties of "shamelessly piggybacking on the hard work and commitment of regional parties."

Taking a jab at Telangana Congress Chief Revanth Reddy, Rama Rao mocked his campaigns and speeches in Maharashtra, claiming they had failed to salvage the Congress party's performance. He urged Reddy to focus on delivering the "six guarantees" the Congress had promised during the Telangana assembly elections last year.

BJP's Navya Haridas reacts as Priyanka Gandhi leads by over 3 lakh votes
AS Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra leads by 3,19,199 votes, with BJP’s Navya Haridas trailing in third place. Haridas expressed disappointment, citing low voter turnout and alleging no development in Wayanad under Congress rule.

Navya said, "While this counting started, we were having expectations because we approached the people by speaking only about the development of Wayanad... This development-oriented election campaign was being done during this election. We had hoped that people will be executing their minds accordingly for development. But unfortunately, the election turnout was very low. BJP couldn't reach the level that we expected...In the last 5 years, if we see, no work was done in any sector. People of Wayanad were longing for medical college for decades but that also was not implemented...Another 5 years will also be like that. Priyanka Vadra will also be in a visiting mode to Wayanad. So, in this campaign, we were asking the people to be with us. But we couldn't win this time."

'Ek hain toh safe hain', says Devendra Fadnavis after Mahayuti's big win
After Mahayuti gained 'thumping majority' in Maharashtra elections, deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "Ek hain toh safe hain, Modi hai toh mumkin hai."

From starting as an obscure corporator to becoming Nagpur's youngest mayor, and then Maharashtra's first BJP chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis' rise in politics has been steady and remarkable.

Now, at 54, the leader is poised to take up the state's top post for the third time. In a state traditionally dominated by Maratha politics, Fadnavis, with his strong RSS connections, stands out as only the second Brahmin after Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi to hold the position of chief minister. Before the 2014 assembly elections, Fadnavis, known for his calm demeanor, was the clear favorite for the role, owing much of his support to the confidence placed in him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leader Amit Shah.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren ahead in Barhait assembly seat
Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren extended his lead to 12,818 votes over BJP's Gamliyel Hembrom in the Barhait assembly constituency, as per the latest trends from the Election Commission. Soren faced a turbulent year, resigning as CM earlier in 2024 after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. He was granted bail in June and re-elected as the JMM's legislature party leader in July. This led to his return as chief minister for the third time, after Champai Soren stepped down.

Meanwhile, CM Soren's wife, Kalpana, was trailing by 3,621 votes in the Gandey assembly seat against her nearest BJP rival, Muniya Devi, after the fifth round of counting.

Sanjay Raut suffering from mental bankruptcy, says BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla
BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded sharply to Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut’s recent remarks, calling him a person "suffering from mental bankruptcy" and adding that no one in Maharashtra takes him seriously. "Sanjay Raut is a person suffering from mental bankruptcy, no one takes him seriously in Maharashtra. Many times, he is also called a joker and today he is talking like a joker. The results in Wayanad are fine, INDIA alliance feels that they will win in Jharkhand, EVM is fine there, EVM was fine in Jammu and Kashmir," he added.

There is no doubt that we could have done better, says Congress leader Supriya Shrinate
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate expressed disappointment with the party's performance in the Maharashtra assembly elections on Saturday, acknowledging that the results were not in line with expectations. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate admitted that the party could have performed better, although she emphasized that the Congress had seen success in Jharkhand, where they are confident of forming the government again.

"Maharashtra elections are opposite to our expectations. There is no doubt that we could have done better. At the same time, however, we are happy that we have performed well in Jharkhand and we are going to repeat our government there. The elections in Maharashtra have been disappointing. Our campaigns were good but maybe the public expects a little more from us and we will deliver on their expectations," she said.

"We should definitely have discussions on how the EVMS, on how the elections were postponed and on how the Mahayuti government was given more time to launch their schemes. We will deliver to the expectations of the people surely," she added.

Why Sanjay Raut called Maharashtra assembly result trends 'fishy'
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut raised concerns about the integrity of the Maharashtra assembly election results, suggesting a "big conspiracy" and alleging that something was "fishy" with the trends pointing towards a landslide victory for the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. Speaking to reporters, Raut expressed disbelief at the results, asserting that they did not reflect the true sentiment of the people. He claimed that there was widespread anger against the government on the ground, particularly among the Marathi community and farmers. "This is not the mandate of the Marathi 'manoos' and farmers," Raut said, emphasizing that he did not accept the results as the people's mandate.

The Rajya Sabha MP further questioned the fairness of the election process, claiming that money played a significant role.

"I see a big conspiracy in this...This is not a mandate of Marathi 'manoos' and farmers," he said. "We do not accept this as people's mandate. Something is fishy in the election results," Raut said.

We will win in both Jharkhand and Maharashtra, says Union minister Giriraj Singh
Union minister Giriraj Singh expressed confidence that the BJP-led NDA alliance will secure victories in both Maharashtra and Jharkhand, attributing potential defeat for the opposition to their communal tactics. Speaking to ANI, Singh criticized the INDI alliance's "naked dance of communalism" in Maharashtra, claiming the state has not accepted such politics. He also took a swipe at Lalu Yadav, suggesting the opposition leader was overly optimistic about the INDI alliance's chances in Jharkhand.

"I am sure we will win in both Jharkhand and Maharashtra. This INDI alliance has done a naked dance of communalism in Maharashtra. Maharashtra has not accepted it. Let Lalu Yadav be happy in believing that INDI alliance is winning in Jharkhand," he said.

"BJP-NDA-Mahayuti is going to make a hat-trick. We are winning Maharashtra as well as Jharkhand. We are winning in Uttar Pradesh too (Assembly by-elections). This clearly shows how people are giving their blessings. It won't be wrong to say - Hum Toh Ek Hain Aur Safe Hain. But are those who brought coffers and spoke of vote jihad? BJP leader Pravin Darekar slams Sanjay Raut after he rejects poll trends
As the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance takes a strong lead in the Maharashtra assembly elections, BJP leader Pravin Darekar has expressed confidence in the party's victory and the formation of a BJP government in the state.

Speaking on the ongoing counting trends, Darekar took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and said, "Sanjay Raut needs to land his aircraft on the ground...Maharashtra will further progress when there is BJP govt both in the state and Centre. This is the reason the public has voted for us. I especially thank the Ladli Behenas in the state. The CM will be of BJP; I think Devendra Fadnavis will be the CM."

This came after Raut refused to accept the early voting trends after Mahayuti crossed 200-mark in Maharashtra.

"We do not accept the leads as the will of the people. This result has been influenced by Adani, who is close to the BJP. A lot of money has been used in this election, and the entire machinery has been involved," he had said.

As the sun goes up, gap will increase, says BJP MP Sanjay Seth on Jharkhand trends
In a statement on Saturday, Union minister of state for defence and BJP MP Sanjay Seth expressed confidence in the party's prospects in Jharkhand, drawing comparisons with the ongoing trends in Maharashtra. Seth pointed out that while Jharkhand has 81 seats and Maharashtra has 288, the smaller scope of the Jharkhand elections wouldn't hinder the BJP's victory. "As the sun rises, the gap will only increase," he said, signaling his optimism.

Seth went on to describe a "wave of change" sweeping through Jharkhand, fueled by rising concerns over corruption, vote-based divisions, rising youth unemployment, and crimes against women during the tenure of the current state government.

"...Jharkhand has 81 seats and Maharashtra has 288 seats. The scope is greater there. We have 81 seats, so the scope is less. But I can confidently say that as the sun goes up, gap will increase...I can confidently say that the wave of change that was seen in Jharkhand - corruption, vote jihad, shattering of the dreams of youth, atrocities of women in 5 years. I am fully confident that the tsunami you see in Maharashtra will come to Jharkhand too at 12 noon," he said.

Election Results 2024 Live: Fears of hung assembly in Maharashtra?
As fears of a hung assembly in Maharashtra grow, both the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the Mahayuti alliance have begun strategic talks with independent candidates and rebel contenders who are seen as "winnable." Exit polls predict that 15-20 independents could secure seats in the 288-member assembly, making them potential kingmakers in a closely contested race.

A senior BJP leader from Chandrapur revealed that Mahayuti has already initiated discussions with about 10 independent candidates who are likely to win. "No major party fights elections to lose, but when the results fall short of expectations, we must secure the numbers needed to form a government," the leader said.

Similarly, a prominent Congress politician from Nagpur emphasized that no party is leaving anything to chance. He noted that independents could become crucial in a hung assembly, prompting both alliances to engage in intense negotiations to win their support. “Both MVA and Mahayuti have established direct lines of communication with these independents,” the politician, a former minister, stated.

While many independents have already aligned themselves with either the MVA or Mahayuti, both sides are working swiftly to lock in their support. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused Mahayuti of attempting to bribe independent candidates, claiming their desperation is a sign of MVA’s impending victory. However, a senior MVA leader acknowledged the tight race, suggesting that both alliances might end up with similar seat tallies, further intensifying the competition for independents’ backing.

A short while from now, trends will start coming in. From what I can understand, the results of the work we did is going to be out. The manner in which we worked for people, providing Old Pension Scheme for employees, waived off farm loans up to Rs 2 Lakhs, provided free electricity up to 200 units to the public, provided help to the elderly people through pension, honoured women through Maiya Samman Yojana. The stamp of approval by people on those schemes will reflect in the results. We believe that this day will decide the future of Jharkhand...We believe that we will form an even stronger government once again. We will take our schemes to the people for another five years.
