NEW DELHI: Election Commission Tuesday directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to verify any mismatch in affidavit details submitted by Union minister & BJP candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Sources said the EC wrote to CBDT after receiving a complaint from Congress alleging discrepancies between actual assets of Chandrashekhar and those declared in the affidavit filed by him along with his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections.

As per standard procedure, EC refers all complaints regarding mismatch in affidavit details to CBDT for probe and action, where warranted. Any mismatch and falsification of an affidavit is dealt with under Section 125A of the Representation of the People Act 1951, they said.

As per law, concealing any information in nomination papers or affidavits is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with a fine, or both.
