ED opens probe against controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi

The Enforcement Directorate is investigating Qureshi's hawala transactions to Hong Kong and Dubai through Delhi-based dealers.
NEW DELHI: Based on recently shared income tax department's appraisal report, the Enforcement Directorate has initiated a formal probe against controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi for Foreign Exchange Management Act violations and has sought more documents from the I-T department about his connections and money transactions. After analyzing all the documents, Qureshi is likely to be called for questioning soon. The Enforcement Directorate is investigating Qureshi's hawala transactions to Hong Kong and Dubai through Delhi-based dealers. Sources say they are mainly probing two aspects – money paid in Dubai especially for shopping done by his wife and children abroad, and payment made through hawala in Hong Kong to renowned French architect Jean-Louis Deniot for designing his Chhattarpur farm. Not just that, ED has reportedly also written to I-T department seeking more documents about his transactions and his connections, meetings and messages which the latter may have tracked. If sources are to be believed, ED may also ask I-T to share the BBM messages between Qureshi and former CBI director A P Singh. Singh recently resigned from UPSC. I-T department was probing Qureshi for alleged tax evasion to the tune of Rs 157 crore. The department had, during searches, claimed to have frozen Rs 20 crore cash and jewellery.
