In the months preceding the assembly polls, BJP found most mention in conversations, Assam was the most talked-about state
NEW DELHI: Mamata Banerjee is not just the favourite of exit polls that suggest her return as West Bengal CM, she’s also ruling social media debates. According to data released by Facebook for the period between February 12 and May 10, 22 million users engaged in 142 million interactions on the assembly elections of Assam, Puducherry, Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. Didi featured in 22% of unique users’ posts.
Assam, where BJP could come to power for the first time, was the most talked-about state — mentioned by 28% of the users. It was followed by Puducherry at 16%, Kerala at 15%, Bengal at 14% and TN at 13%. While the Tarun-Gogoi led Congress government is set to be ousted after three consecutive terms in Assam according to most exit polls, the CM was the third most mentioned politician, garnering 14% of mentions. He was next only to Didi and Kerala’s Oommen Chandy (20%), who, most exit polls suggest, is set to be dislodged as CM by a Left Democratic Front victory. DMK president M Karunanidhi came in next at 11% while BJP’s Assam CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal was close on his heels at 10%.
While social media numbers are not an indicator of who is going to win, they suggest which parties, politicians, and issues occupied the young brigade’s mind. The figures can serve as insight into the reasons behind the outcomes in these states. It’s not surprising then that BJP was engaged by 61% of users in their conversations. Congress, which will be comforted by its projected win in alliance with the DMK, in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, was the second-most popular party on FB at 47%. The outlier, Kejriwal’s AAP, was a surprising third at 25% on the social network while DMK and CPM were on the minds of just 6% of the network’s users.
