NEW DELHI: Two people died and two others were injured after a massive fire broke out at a house in Delhi's Old Govindpura area of Jagatpuri in Shahdara district late Tuesday evening, officials confirmed.
Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said that the incident was reported at around 8:46 pm from Band Gali, Old Govindpura. A team from Jagatpuri police station rushed to the spot, where it was found that at least 10 people were trapped inside a residential building that had caught fire.
“Six people were rescued with help from police and fire brigade personnel. Four people were sent to Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where two, identified as Tanveer (28) and Nusrat, were declared dead,” DCP Gautam said, as per news agency ANI.
The two injured, Faizal from Khureji Khas and Aasif (18), are currently under treatment.
According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), a total of nine fire tenders were pressed into service to tackle the blaze.
Fire officer Deepak Hooda said they received the emergency call around 8:45 pm and began rescue operations promptly. “We have rescued people, and four were taken to the hospital. The doctors will declare if there is any casualty,” Hooda stated earlier in the night.
The situation was brought under control within an hour, as per DFS officials. Ambulance services and local police teams were also at the scene to assist in evacuation efforts.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, and a detailed investigation is underway.
Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities as forensic and fire department teams assess the damage.
