India recorded 37,152 new cases on Monday, the lowest daily count since March 17, while the day’s

Covid

death toll remained low at 699, not counting 186 old deaths added by Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, the week gone by (June 21-27), Maharashtra recorded 64,113 cases, a 2% fall from the previous week’s case count of 65,487. This was a slowdown from a 17.4% drop in cases in the previous seven days and a 23% fall in preceding week. While the percentage of decline usually slows down as cases decrease, in Maharashtra’s case this has happened at a stage when the state is still recording 9,000 to10,000 fresh cases on several days.

Kerala’s case is similar. The state recorded 79,500 new cases during June 21-27, the highest count in India and 2% less than the tally (81,155) in the previous week. In fact, Kerala and Maharashtra have been recording among the slowest daily decline in infections since cases peaked in these states.

The numbers also reveal a spike in the northeast, with Arunachal Pradesh recording a 68% rise in cases, Mizoram 42% and Nagaland 17%.
