NEW DELHI: India has vaccinated over 80% of
adolescents
between 15-18 years age with at least the first
dose
of Covid
vaccine
, crossing another major
milestone
even as fear of new variant and spread of infection through school going children continue to hover.
Around 61% of youngsters in this age category of 15-18 years are now fully vaccinated against
Covid-19
with two doses, official data shows. There are around 7.40 crore adolescents estimated to be in this category of 15-18 years.
The expansion of coverage also assumes significance as adolescents in this age group are considered to behave much like adults and can be potential carriers of the infection. Large-scale vaccination coverage among them is likely to ensure that possibility of spread of infection through these adolescents is also minimised.
“Young India is taking the world's largest vaccination drive to new heights! Over 80 per cent of youngsters between the 15-18 age group have received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine,” health minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted.
Overall, nearly 193 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered across the country so far. This includes over 3.3 crore ‘precaution doses’ or boosters.
The Covid-19 vaccination for the age group of 12-14 years was started on March 16 and so far more than 3.30 crore adolescents in this age group have been administered the first dose.
