AGARTALA: The army will launch vigorous counter insurgency operations before elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council slated for March 5, official sources today said.
Lt Gen Arvind Sharma, GOC Eastern Command, who was on a two-day visit to Tripura, met Governor D N Sahaya and Chief Minister Manik Sakar on Monday night and discussed the problems of militancy and counter insurgency operations being carried out by the security forces in the state.

Additional companies of the Assam Rifles have started arriving in the state to perform poll related duties and they would be also be engaged in counter insurgency operations, the sources said.
The GOC assured the state administration full support of the Assam Rifles and the army in curbing militancy so that development activities in the state were not hampered and elections could be run in free, fair and peaceful manner.
Meanwhile, the police have decided that one helicopter carrying five to six special commandos from a central paramilitary force would keep vigil against militants.
