With India closing in on 75 years of independence, there is much debate about the evolution of Indian democracy. Former RBI governor Bimal Jalan shares his thoughts about the future of India in his new book ‘India Reckoning: Rewards and Discontents of Democracy’. He spoke with TOI on the health of the Indian system, governance and reforms:

Your book suggests citizens have a somewhat schizophrenic view of Indian democracy even as they participate in elections in ever increasing numbers. What accounts for this apparent anomaly?
