Coronavirus live updates: Maharashtra reports 960 Covid deaths, highest so far
India recorded 3,26,098 new cases and 3,890 fatalities on Saturday, as per Covid data collated from state government figures. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 31,30,17,193 samples were tested for Covid-19 up to May 14, 2021. Of these, 16,93,093 samples were tested yesterday. "We were told we shall get 70 PSA Plants, now we are told that we shall get 4 in the first phase with no clarity on the remaining PSA Plants," Mamata Banerjee wrote in her letter. "Our own supplementary PSA installation plans by our state agencies and on the strength of our own funds are getting disturbed because of the indecisiveness at Delhi," she further said.
RT-PCR reports for people flying out of India from May 22 are required to have a QR code linking to the original report. The new requirement comes due to a significant number of false/forged negative reports being furnished to travel.
Japan widens virus emergency to three more prefectures
Japan is declaring a state of emergency in three more prefectures hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, it said on Friday, in a surprise move that reflects growing concern about the spread of the coronavirus. Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima will join Tokyo, Osaka and four other prefectures on Sunday under a state of emergency until May 31, said Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who is also in charge of virus countermeasures.
Nepal allows 'special flights' to evacuate stranded foreigners
Nepal has permitted special flights to evacuate over 7,000 foreign nationals, including 2,000 Indians, stranded in the country after it suspended all international flights. The government has also allowed the Indian Embassy to evacuate its stranded citizens who were using Kathmandu as a transit point to go to Saudi Arabia for employment after a number of countries banned direct flights from India after it was overwhelmed by a second wave.
