Coronavirus updates: MOS and BJP MP Suresh Angadi dies of Covid-19

People gathered outside the residence of late Suresh Angadi, Minister of State for Railways in Belgavi, late last night.

A fourth-term parliamentarian from Belagavi in Karnataka, Angadi had on September 11 announced on Twitter that he had contracted the disease and had requested all those who came in close contact with him in the previous days to monitor their health and get tested in case of any symptoms. He is the first Union minister to have died of coronavirus. At least six MLAs and three MPs have earlier succumbed to it. Former president Pranab Mukherjee, who died on August 31, was also diagnosed as Covid-19 positive.

The 65-year-old BJP MP passed away around 8 pm at the AIIMS trauma centre which has been converted into a dedicated Covid-19 facility, sources at the hospital said. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, who died due to Covid-19 at the AIIMS on Wednesday, was a four-time Member of Parliament from Belagavi consecutively since 2004. The 65-year-old, survived by his wife and two daughters, was associated with the RSS from a young age. Born on June 1, 1955 in a Lingayat family to Somawwa and Channabasappa Angadi in village Koppa in Belagavi, Angadi did his graduation from SSS Samiti College of Commerce in the same district.

Pandemics caused by a new virus have the propensity to infect human population in multiple waves and some countries which initially successfully contained the Covid-19 outbreak are now reporting a resurgence of cases, the Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday. Government of India has accordingly advised states to upgrade health infrastructure based on the case growth trajectory in respective states and districts, besides taking stringent containment measures, Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey said in a written reply.
