Contempt case: Gurumurthy discharged over anti-judge tweet

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court accepted on Thursday RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy’s apology and discharged him in acriminal contempt case filed over his tweet against Justice S Muralidhar in 2018.

A division bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Gaurang Kanth was hearing a petition filed by the Delhi High Court Bar Association against Gurumurthy in 2018.

“We accept Mr S Gurumurthy’s apology and expression of deep remorse for the subject incident and consider it appropriate to discharge the show-cause issued to him in the present contempt petition. He accordingly stands discharged,” the bench said.

The matter is related to a tweet by Gurumurthy where he asked whether Justice Muralidhar was a junior of senior advocate P Chidambaram. Justice Muralidhar had said he had no relationship with Chidambaram and that he never worked as his junior.

During the hearing, the bench had remarked that the dignity of judges rests on a surer footing than tweets.
