NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday slammed its Mumbai unit chief Sanjay Nirupam for calling Indian Army's surgical strikes on terror camps as fake.

"Sonia Gandhi and Rahul have unequivocally supported the surgical strikes and the party has full faith in the armed forces," the Congress said.

'There is no reason to raise questions about the announcement made by the DGMO (Director General of Military Operation),' party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, adding, "Indian Army has conducted strikes in the past also."

The Congress leader said armed strikes were conducted under UPA on September 18, 2011, July 28, 2013, and January 14, 2014.

Earlier, Sanjay Nirupam accused the BJP of indulging in politics over national interest and tweeted, "Every Indian wants surgical strikes against Pakistan but not a fake one to extract just political benefit by BJP. politics over national interest(sic)."

Congress attacks Parrikar

The Congress also slammed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for his politically motivated statements on the surgical strikes. The party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the BJP from making political capital out of a question of national security.

Surjewala said Pakistan was carrying out a fake propaganda about strikes and government should present evidence to rebuff it.

'Let Pakistan be in denial forever but it is in fitness of things that government must use all means to quash the doubting Toms,' he added.
