Congress meets NBSA, seeks to check acrimonious TV debates

NEW DELHI: A delegation of

Congress leaders

on Wednesday met the News

Broadcasting Standards Authority

(NNBSA) and petitioned it to issue an advisory to media houses to enforce a code of conduct to curb “sensationalist, slanderous and toxic” TV debates.


The meeting, which follows the death of Congress spokesperson Rajiv Tyagi earlier this month following a TV debate he appeared in. Congress had raised concerns over the vicious nature of TV debates.

and Jaiveer also emphasised the need for strict adherence to NBSA guidelines. Singhvi said media houses, journalists, anchors and spokespersons must be held accountable for their actions and conduct and said NBSA has the authority to ensure compliance with its guidelines and instructions.

The NBA guidelines on broadcast of potentially defamatory content, dated 13th December 2012, have been stated to prevent the inculpable harm on an individual given the phenomenal power and reach of broadcasting.

“The TRP paradigm drives the sensational, slanderous and sardonic debate panels. There is an eminent need for adherence to the code of conduct & need for institutional reform in India with respect to holding of TV debates,” the delegation submitted to NBSA.
