VARANASI: Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, who was killed in a firce gunbattle in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, belonged to Ghazipur district of eastern UP. Just a day earlier, he was awarded a gallantry medal on the occasion of Republic Day.
Native of Derhgava village in Sohaval area of Ghazipur district, Rai was commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles.
Col Rai was among the gallantry medal awardees announced on the eve of Republic Day. He was awarded Yudh Seva medal for his role in a gunbattle with militants in south Kashmir last year.
His father Nagendra Narayan Rai lives in Chandan Nagal colony in Ghazipur town while his wife Priyanka Rai with two kids live in New Delhi for their studies. Rai's two elder brothers VN Rai and YN Rai are also in army.
