NEW DELHI: Defence minister A K Antony on Monday said China’s criticism of his visit to Arunachal Pradesh was “really objectionable”. “I was surprised to see such a reaction. I feel it is most unfortunate and, at the same time, it is really objectionable,” Antony told reporters here.
The defence minister’s comments came in response to China’s sharp criticism of Antony’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh to attend celebrations commemorating 25 years of statehood of the border state.
China had said such visits could complicate the border issue between the two countries.
The minister pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh was an integral part of India and as defence minister, it was his duty to visit the state. “I have been visiting Arunachal since 1984. This time, I was thrilled to visit the state on its silver jubilee of attaining statehood,” Antony said.
The minister said he was happy about the progress made by the state and he had to give full support to it.
China treats Arunachal Pradesh as a disputed territory and every time Indian dignitaries visit the state, it raises objections. The latest criticism is only part of a routine Chinese response.
