NEW DELHI: Revenue secretary K M Chandrasekhar will be the new cabinet secretary. He will take over from B K Chaturvedi who retires in June after having been in office since July, 2004.
A UP cadre officer, Chaturvedi had been given a year's extention last year.
Chandrasekhar, a 1970 batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre, has earlier been India's permanent representative at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
He is seen to be an efficient bureaucrat.
With Chandrasekhar's appointment, he joins the influential Malayali circle of senior officials who enjoy the confidence of the powers-that-be on Raisina Hill. The top of Lutyens Delhi's power pyramid is quite crowded with Kerala expats.
There is secretary to President P Madhavan Nair; national security advisor M K Narayanan; principal secretary to PM T K A Nair and foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon.
