NEW DELHI: Even as the Tripura government pressed the CID to inquire into the alleged nexus of a top ruling party politician with a Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant, the Centre too has ordered a parallel probe, asking the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to begin a 'secret inquiry'.
The politician quit the state cabinet in the wake of the allegation.

"The IB was asked to conduct its own inquiry as the entire episode has serious security implications," said a senior home ministry official.
Sahid Chowdhury resigned on Thursday as Tripuras food and minority affairs minister in the wake of the allegation. But on Friday, his party CPM virtually gave him a clean chit.
Though the state CID has already begun the inquiry into the alleged nexus between HuJI militant Mamun Mian and Chowdhury, the parallel probe at the Centre is significant as, officials believe, it would act as a deterrent for the state sleuths to come out with any conclusion under political pressure.
Besides probing the alleged nexus, the IB will also try to find out as to how the Bangladeshi national Mamun Mian could live in India without a valid passport and obtain a permanent resident certificate (PRC) in Tripura.
Mamun Mian was arrested from a house in the Ramnagar area of Agartala last month following the arrest of two Bangladeshis, Alamgir Hussain and Shamim Akhtar, from Howrah. Some arms and explosives were recovered from them.
