Centre extends tenure of foreign secretary Vikram Misri till July 2026

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday extended the tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri until July 2026. He was scheduled to retire on November 30.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved an extension in the service of Shri Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), as foreign secretary beyond the date of his superannuation, i.e., 30.11.2024, for a tenure up to July 14, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the appointment committee said in a circular.

According to officials, the provisions allow an extension in the service of a Foreign Secretary beyond the date of superannuation in the public interest.

Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, assumed charge as India's Foreign Secretary on July 15.

Misri has held important positions in the past. He has served in both the External Affairs Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office. Misri was the Ambassador to China from January 2019 to December 2021.

He was also the Ambassador to Spain and Myanmar. He was appointed as the Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) on January 1, 2022. Misri served as the private secretary to Prime Ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.
