Centre and Uttar Pradesh join hands for 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela
NEW DELHI: In a shift from tradition, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre will jointly host the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela, scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This collaborative effort was formalised during a recent meeting between union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In previous editions of the Maha Kumbh, the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government managed their spaces and visitor experiences independently. During the last Maha Kumbh, the union ministry of tourism and culture was allocated a 12-acre site across the river, separate from the main congregation. This arrangement, according to Shekhawat, limited visitor footfall to the space. “For the forthcoming Maha Kumbh, an 18-acre land has been granted in Daraganj, and we are expecting a much higher footfall,” the minister shared.
The Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, is expected to draw millions of devotees and tourists, making the enhanced collaboration a significant step toward better coordination and representation.
This time, the Centre and State will jointly operate from Daraganj, a prime location close to the main tent city, marking a departure from their earlier practice of individual showcases. “Earlier, the State and Centre used to showcase separately. But following a meeting with UP CM Yogi Adityanathji, we will be jointly showcasing India at Daraganj,” Shekhawat said.
The joint pavilion will highlight India’s rich cultural heritage over the 45-day event, featuring exhibitions of traditional arts, folk performances, diverse cuisines, and crafts. Additionally, 15 other spaces will rotate between participating states, offering them an opportunity to showcase their unique cultural contributions.
