PATIALA: It is expected that Government Medical College of Patiala may soon house the first central medical research lab of the state. College authorities have submitted a detailed proposal to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which would finance the around Rs 6-crore project.
Under its multi-disciplinary research unit scheme, ICMR had sought proposal from the college authorities some days ago to set up the lab.

Though the health officers are tightlipped as the project is still in its initial stage, sources said it would be the first central research lab of Punjab.
Punjab would provide land for the project and all other expenses would be paid by ICMR. The present research labs are located on a small area are not much affective.
"The ICMR will spend around Rs 6 crore on the project. Though we have small research labs in all departments, the central lab would serve a better purpose," said a senior health officer.
ICMR has sought around 3,000 sq feet area from the college. Director of research and medical education (DRME), Punjab, Jai kishan confirmed the development.
