When contacted, the CBI spokesperson said that Gauba was relieved at his own request as he was to proceed on a study leave. “He has been selected for Fulbright Scholarship beginning August 1. His tenure would have ended in October this year and he would have completed seven years in CBI. As per the tenure policy, he couldn’t have remained here for more than seven years,” the spokesperson said.

“So, on his personal request, he has been repatriated to his parent cadre, from where he will proceed on his scholarship.,” the officer said,

Gauba had earlier probed the Vyapam case and was later selected for the President's Medal for outstanding investigations in the case. He was given three meritorious service medals in 2017 on Republic Day.
