VIJAYAWADA: A case was registered against filmmaker
Ram Gopal Varma in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday on a complaint alleging he had posted derogatory content on social media that tarnished the reputation of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his son and IT minister Nara Lokesh, daughter-in-law Brahmani, and other
TDP functionaries, during promotion of his film ‘Vyooham’.
Sub-inspector Shiva Ramaiah said Varma was booked under IT Act for online defamation and misuse of digital platforms for spreading false information, based on a complaint lodged by TDP mandal secretary Ramalingam.
An investigation had been launched into the allegations, he added.
‘Vyooham’ was initially scheduled for release in Feb, but faced multiple controversies and was finally released in March, a few weeks before elections. The social media posts in question were part of promotional activities for the film, which was based on tragic death of ex-CM Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash in 2009 and subsequent formation of YSR Congress Party by his son YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who was Andhra CM from 2019 to 2024.
Varma has also previously made derogatory comments against Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan, who is now the deputy chief minister.
