A parliamentary committee has proposed a heritage squad to safeguard the country’s tangible cultural heritage, but the scale of plunder makes it a challenge

It has been some harrowing years for cultural watchdogs. As the country’s heritage is plundered, the Union government is finally acting to put in place a guardian for antiquities to prevent thefts.

On July 24, a parliamentary standing committee submitted a 100-page report titled ‘Heritage Theft - The Illegal Trade in Indian Antiquities and the Challenges of Retrieving and Safeguarding Our Tangible Cultural Heritage’, which discusses the looting of India’s treasure trove. The report makes a case for setting up a heritage squad.
