JAMMU: At least eight people, including a BSF assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and four minors, were injured in unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The heavy firing and shelling of border areas in Jammu region continued into Wednesday night.

"A BSF officer, ASI A K Upadhyay, was injured this morning as Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing along the international border in R S Pura and Arnia sectors of Jammu," Jammu deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh said. He said that the Sai Kalan area also faced shelling from across the border, adding, "Arnia also came under shelling from 0130 hours". "People have already been advised to remain indoors, so no human casualties have been reported," he said.

The shelling killed three cattle while 12 other animals were reported injured.

Meanwhile police sources said seven civilians, including four minor girls, sustained splinter injuries from a mortar fired from across the border.

Jammu deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh said the government has issued an advisory and all the educational institutions near the international border have been closed in the wake of the firing and people were moving to safer locations, reported PTI. "In the wake of the heavy firing, border residents are migrating to safer locations. Whenever there is a lull in the firing, they leave their houses to shift to either safe camps or to their relatives houses at safer locations," he said.
