Oscar nominations for two Indian documentaries come at a challenging time for this medium

Even as India was celebrating ‘Naatu Naatu’ winning the Golden Globe, the hit song from RRR has made it to the ‘Best Original Song’ category in the Oscar awards. We are a nation that loves our cinema. And when a popular film song finds global acclaim, it is exciting news.

But ‘Naatu Naatu’ is just one among three Oscar nominations from India this year. Two Indian documentaries have quietly entered the Oscars. All that Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen has been nominated in the ‘Best Documentary Feature Film’ category. The Elephant Whisperers directed by Kartiki Gonsalves has been nominated in the category of ‘Best Documentary Short Film’. Also this week, the Indian media is filled with debates on the BBC documentary about PM Modi. Social media is full of people downloading it or dissing it.
