NEW DELHI: BJP on Monday said its govt has always taken "tough steps" when it comes to persecution of Hindus or infringement of their rights as it condemned the violence perpetrated by separatists at a temple in Canada.

"We have seen how strongly and clearly a firm reply has been given to Canada while displaying India's strength," BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said. "I think taking cognisance of this case also, India will put forth its stand firmly and take steps whatever is necessary," he added.

Vishva Hindu Parishad, too, condemned the violence and said the Justin Trudeau govt had miserably failed in ensuring safety to the Indian community. "Indian embassy had given prior information about the planned attack to the Canadian govt three days ago and had also requested proper security. How was this ignored?" VHP president Alok Kumar asked. He said this was not the first attack on a temple in Canada. "Even before this, Hindu temples have been attacked in Greater Toronto, British Columbia and Brampton," Kumar added.

"We had seen a statement by PM Trudeau on Diwali. He noted that Indo-Canadians form biggest migrant group in Canada, and assured them safety and security. That has not happened," Kumar said. "We do believe that this may be rather intentional," he added.

The VHP chief criticised Trudeau and hoped his govt would take "firm and determined action" to stop attacks on Hindu temples in the country. "We remind Hindus there that the right to defend themselves is given to them by law."
