MEERUT: BJP supporters protested outside the office of Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (PVVNL) here on Thursday, alleging that the rural areas around Meerut get only two hours of electricity in a day.
“The scheduled time for distribution of electricity in the rural areas is 12 hours, but the villages here are getting only 2 hours of electricity in fragments.
Power supply for at least 8 hours should be made available to the villages,” said Ashok Tyagi, BJP president in Meerut.
Another BJP leader, Ishwar Chand Tyagi, said, “The voltage in rural areas is very low and keeps fluctuating, which leads to short circuits in the transformers.”
Meanwhile, the local farmers were worried for their farms, which are on the brink of drying.
A farmer, Rajendra Singh Chauhan, claimed that because of less power supply, the farmers are facing difficulties in watering their farms. Rajendra Agrawal, the recently elected MP from BJP said, “PVVNL should fix up a particular time for the supply of power so that farmers don’t have to be worried for their lands.”
When V.V. Pant, the managing director of PVVNL was contacted, he said, “We have had a meeting with higher authorities, and demanded them to increase the power distribution time as per the scheduled availability. A positive result within 4 to 5 days is expected.”
