The city was originally established by King Bhutta in the third century in the forests of Punjab. Over time, it changed hands among various rulers, with Bal Rav Bhatti eventually recapturing and naming it Bathinda. Notably, it was here that Razia Sultan, India's first woman ruler, was imprisoned.
In the 2019 election, Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal successfully defended her seat, securing 490,811 votes. Amrinder Singh Raja of the Congress party was a close second with 469,412 votes, and Baljinder Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party came third with 134,398 votes. The voter turnout for that year was 74.10%, indicating a high level of electoral participation.
During the 2014 election, Harsimrat Kaur Badal won with a margin of 19,395 votes, defeating Manpreet Singh Badal from the Congress party. Harsimrat Kaur garnered 514,727 votes, making up 43.73% of the total vote share, while Manpreet Singh received 495,332 votes, accounting for 42.09%.
Bathinda's political landscape remains dynamic and competitive, with its historical significance and contemporary electoral battles reflecting the evolving political preferences of its populace. The outcomes of these elections are closely watched, given the constituency's strategic importance and vibrant political activity.
