new delhi: the catholic bishops’ conference of india (cbci) on wednesday expressed ‘‘deep regret and distress’’ over recent attacks on church institutions and its personnel in port blair, bihar, chhattisgarh and karnataka. vincent m concessao, archbishop of delhi, said the cbci is planning to appeal to pm vajpayee and home minister advani to look into these matters as ‘‘we feel embarrassed when acts of intolerance such as these appear to raise its head again.’’ oswald gracias, secretary general of the cbci and archbishop of agra, in a statement condemned the attacks such as one in port blair on a christian cemetery on february 12, in bihar a statue of virgin mary was broken in bettiah on january 20, in raipur a priest was attacked and in hinkal, karnataka a church was attacked.
