In a near-repeat of 2018, Tripura Thursday voted for the return of a BJP-led government, Nagaland overwhelmingly chose the stability of the NDPP-BJP combine and Meghalaya threw up a hung House, resulting in estranged allies BJP and NPP coming together again in abid to form an NPP-led NDA government in the state for a second consecutive term.
In Meghalaya, NPP’s 26 seats are an improvement over its 2018 tally of 20, but four short of a majority. BJP maintained status quo with a lower-than-expected return of two victories after going it alone and contesting all 60 seats against its former allies NPP and UDP. Election to one Meghalaya seat was countermanded following the death of a UDP candidate. UDP won 11 seats this time, increasing its tally by five seats.
Chief minister and NPP chief Conrad K Sangma called Union home minister Amit Shah in the evening and “sought his support and blessings in forming the new government”. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma then tweeted that BJP president JP Nadda “advised the state unit of BJP, Meghalaya, to support the National People’s Party in forming the next government in Meghalaya”.
Shortly after Sangma’s call to Shah, Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie offered a letter of support to Sangma. However, NPP still remainstwo seats short of a majorityin the Meghalaya assembly.
Congress found itself on the verge of extinction in the North-East, where it has suffered debacles in 12 assembly elections over the past eight years. In Meghalaya, its tally went down to five from 21 in 2018. In Tripura, where it had drawn a blank in 2018, it was able to win three seats.
“Small elections in small states do not affect us much,” AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge told the media.

BJP, allies return to power in Tripura and Nagaland; Conrad Sangma poised to repeat NPP-led government in Meghalaya

The BJP created history on Thursday by returning to power in Tripura and the NDPP-BJP alliance swept the polls in Nagalanad. The BJP is also part of the sweepstakes to form government in Meghalaya having decided to extend support to the National People's Party which emerged as the single-largest party with 26 seats.

BJP and NPP were partners in the outgoing government but had contested the polls separately.

BJP's performance in the assembly polls in the three northeastern states showed its continued dominance in the region, which was once a Congress stronghold. The outcome meant that there will be no change of government in the three northeastern states in the results declared on Thursday. Assembly polls in the three states were held last month.

The parties opposed to BJP did relatively better in the results of assembly bypolls.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma is likely to meet state Governor Phagu Chauhan on Friday morning to stake claim to form the next government, officials said on Thursday. Sangma, also the president of the ruling NPP, will go to Raj Bhawan at 11:30 am on Friday and meet the governor to apprise him of the assembly election results, the official said.

However, many leaders there are committed to national politics and they support Congress and secular parties, he added.

The BJP and its allies have secured a second term in power in Tripura as well as Nagaland, and the saffron party will be supporting the National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya to form the government there under the leadership of current chief minister Conrad Sangma. With the latest results and proposed alliances, the BJP now heads -- or has a presence -- in six of the seven northeast governments. The saffron party is yet to make inroads in Mizoram, which is set to go to the polls later this year.
