Assam, West Bengal election 2021 live updates: Bengal, Assam witness high turnout as Phase 1 voting concludes

First phase of polling for Assam and West Bengal assembly elections are being conducted today. Voters in 47 seats in Assam in the state's north-eastern region will be voting today. In West Bengal, 30 seats in the Jungal Mahal area in the south-western fringes go to polls today. 7 seats in Bengal have been identified as extremely sensitive, while the number is 3 for Assam. Mamata’s poll agent gets SC relief in 14-yr-old cases

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Calcutta hich court order reviving 14-year-old criminal cases against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s election agent in connection with the Nandigram protests against land acquisition. In a relief to S K Supian, a bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Krishna Murari said the HC passed the order without hearing him. It stayed the order passed on March 5. The apex court said that its stay order will operate for two weeks or until the high court hears the plea.

In Assam, Shah vows laws to fight ‘land & love jihad’

Union home minister Amit Shah said on Friday that the next BJP government in Assam would enact laws to confront the “menace of love jihad and land jihad” to strengthen Assamese culture and civilisation. Campaigning for the second phase of elections at Jagiraod and Kamalpur, Shah accused the previous Congress government of patronising infiltrators brought with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal’s support. He said the infiltrators encroached on the land of “sattras (Vaishnavite monasteries)”, other places of worship, and also Kaziranga National Park.
