GUWAHATI: Amid reports of his missing brother suspected to have joined the militant ranks in J&K, the
Assam government on Wednesday transferred out IPS officer Inam- Ul-Haq Mengnoo, from his current posting as superintendent of police of Hamren in Assam’s
Karbi Anglong district.
Mengnoo, a 2012 batch IPS officer, hails from Dragud village of Shopian district of J&K, has now been made the commanding officer of an
Assam Police
commando battalion based at Mandakata near the city.
Media reports quoting intelligence sources have reported that the younger Mengnoo Shams-ul-Haq was pursuing a course in Unani medicine and surgery in a Srinagar college and was missing since May 26.
The SP when contacted refused to comment, “I don’t read newspapers. I don’t watch news channels and so I won’t be able to say anything on this.”
The state government maintains that Mengnoo’s transfer is a routine exercise. “There are five more police officials whose transfers have been notified by the governor of the state along with that of Hamren SP. So this is absolutely a routine exercise.”
A source said that so far J&K police have not got in touch with Assam Police. “The SP can’t be held responsible for what his brother or any of his family members do. Moreover, in this case no one in J&K has established that the boy has joined the militant ranks. We don’t have to jump into conclusion. Inam- Ul- Haq Mengnoo is known to be a very efficient police officer and a thorough gentleman in Assam Police,” a senior police official said.
