NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha chairperson Hamid Ansari on Friday appointed Ashwani Kumar of the Congress as chairman of the 13-member Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha on The Prevention and Torture Bill, 2010.
The proposed law seeks to ensure the elimination of torture inflicted by public servants or any other person with the consent or acquiescence of a public servant.

The Bill seeks to facilitate ratification by India of the UN Convention Against Torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment of any individual.
