Asaram gets SC interim bail on medical grounds

NEW DELHI: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is undergoing life imprisonment after being convicted by a Gujarat court in a rape case, was granted interim bail till March 31 on medical grounds by Supreme Court on Tuesday.

A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal granted him the relief to get treatment as he is suffering from various ailments, but directed him to not meet his followers during this period.

Asaram, however, will not be able to immediately come out of jail as he has also been convicted in another rape case in Rajasthan. The apex court had issued notice to the Gujarat govt in Nov on Asaram's plea seeking suspension of his life imprisonment sentence in the rape case. The bench turned down the plea, but granted him limited relief to get treatment.
