Kambala was in the limelight recently after two jockeys 'broke' Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt's 100m world record. As India wakes up to the buffalo race in slushy fields, is this its second coming?

Intermittent roars of a crowd from a paddy field in Moodbidri, some 30km from Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district, could be heard from a distance. Santhosh Pucher skipped the event as he was busy shooting a short film. He only got to know later that one of the jockeys, Srinivas Gowda, had hit headlines for his lightning-fast performance that day, even drawing comparisons to Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt. Gowda's record was surpassed by another jockey, Nishant Shetty, who covered the 100m distance in 9.51 seconds, just days later.

As the village spoke of the feat, Pucher could only listen to them and imagine what it would have been like. “It’s not cricket where I can check highlights online, it’s only word of mouth and a few videos recorded on mobile phones,” he said.
