NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Monday said that the appointment of deputy chief ministers, a practice that is followed in many states to give a little more importance to senior leaders in the party or coalition of parties in power, is not unconstitutional.

A bench of CJI D Y Chandrachud, and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said the deputy ministers are under Constitution just members of the council of ministers headed by the CM and nothing more.

The bench dismissed a PIL challenging the appointment of deputy CMs on the ground that no such post finds mention in the Constitution. SC says appointment of dy CMs does not breach any provision of the Constitution.
