Amid thaw in ties, Canada's envoy-designate arrives in India

NEW DELHI: Canada's high commissioner-designate Christopher Cooter arrived in India on Thursday, amid efforts by both sides to rebuild the relationship after ties nosedived over the killing of a Sikh separatist in 2023.

India and Canada had recently announced the names of their respective high commissioners, following the understanding reached between PM Narendra Modi and his counterpart Mark Carney during the former's visit to Canada for the G7 summit in June.


Senior Indian diplomat Dinesh Patnaik is also expected to soon assume his new responsibility as India's high commissioner to Canada. Cooter is familiar with India as he has served as a political officer with the Canadian mission here in the late 1990s.

Canada's foreign minister Anita Anand had earlier announced the appointment, saying it reflected Canada's step-by-step approach to deepening diplomatic engagement and advancing bilateral cooperation with India. "This appointment is an important development toward restoring services for Canadians while strengthening the bilateral relationship to support Canada's economy," she had said. Cooter has 35 years of diplomatic experience. tnn
