In June this year, a woman and her five daughters died by suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in Chhattisgarh's Mahasamund district. Uma Sahu was under severe stress because of her husband Kejram’s alcoholism. Kejram would often get abusive with his wife over their daughters' education and marriage. Even after their deaths, he remains unrepentant, defending his addiction as a habit his wife should have learned to live with.
A few days after this incident, two girls aged 17 and 12 years, hacked their drunkard father to death in the state’s Rajnandgaon district when in an inebriated state he tried to beat up their ailing mother.
