JALANDHAR: A Shiromani Akali Dal councillor allegedly shot dead a Jalandhar hotelier’s 31-year-old son in the city’s posh Model Town area on Wednesday night. Ram Simran Singh Makkar allegedly killed Gurkirat Singh Sekhon after the two scuffled.
The two were childhood friends and had studied together at Jalandhar’s St Joesph’s Convent School and Apeejay School.

But they had been estranged for a few months. Police said Sekhon was returning home from his hotel, Sekhon Grand, just after midnight when he stopped to talk to Makkar and his three friends. They soon got into an altercation and scuffled. Makkar in a fit of rage fired at Sekhon from a point-blank range. Police said Makkar, nephew of Akali legislator Sarabjit Makkar, was on the run to avoid arrest.
