NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is planning to set up sharia counselling centres across the country with special focus on mediation to settle marital disputes and counsel couples against talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq) where talaq is pronounced thrice in one go.
The board intends to step up awareness against instant talaq and inform couples about the proper process involved in triple talaq given over three separate sittings over a laid out timeframe and after the stipulated mediation.

“We feel the community will respond positively to these centres as they will function within the realm of the teachings of Quran and try and resolve disputes outside the courts. On triple talaq too, we will discuss the matter with the couples seeking separation within the ambit of the SC verdict. We will abide by the law as it stands and as stated by the Supreme Court on the issue of triple talaq," Saifullah Rahmani, secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board said. On the fear that the AIMPLB was setting up “sharia courts” as an alternative to the legal system of recourse, Rahmani said this was a “misrepresentation”.
