What remains when bulldozers are gone? A spot report from 3 cities

TOI visits Bhopal, Sendhwa and Delhi to see the aftermath of the demolition drive that destroyed people's homes and shops...leaving them homeless and without a livelihood

Livelihood gone, there is no money for school fees

Jahangirpuri, Delhi: The temporary iron ladder shakes as Noor Alam comes down the steps of his brick tenement. Exactly two months ago Alam and his family sat cowering on the first floor of his home as a bulldozer pulled down his shop including the brick staircase. A video of the stranded Jahangirpuri family trying to shield itself from the metal monster had gone viral.

His shop that supplied animal feed to the neighbouring Bhalswa dairy was destroyed and with that went his livelihood. Alam has a family of eight, including three children. “I sat at home, too scared to do anything, for two months. Just a few days ago I took a loan to restart the business,” he says. He mortgaged his wife Sarika’s jewellery for Rs 20,000. “I lost everything that day,” he says.
